felinefanatic replied: "I had an asthmatic cat for seven years. He started out on Prednisone, and progressed to Sol-u-medrol (another steroid) and inhalers as well. His asthma was medically managed like this for several years with great success. He needs to stay indoors, esp. on ozone action days. Also avoid using any type of aerosol spray any where near him as this could potentially irritate his airways thus bring on an attack. If you can afford it purchase an air purifier. I think this is what helped my cat the most (my opinion)Pay close attention to her and try to identify the triggers for this allergic reaction. If you can identify the triggers then you can make sure kitty avoids them You should probably just resign yourself to the fact that she will be taking medication for the rest of her life. Also try to avoid extreme temperatures with her as this is a common trigger.
Good luck. I hope your kitty does well.

What's the best cat litter for a cat on steroids (he pees a LOT)? My cat has asthma and is on monthly prednisone shots, and consequently pees quite a lot. I have been trying to find the best ecologically neutral, dust free, non-tracking, easy to use litter. I've tried Yesterday's Papers, which just turned into mush. Feline Pine, and all corn-based ones (worlds best, etc) bothered me for misusing natural resources, plus didn't work well. Swheat Scoop worked well but was again not good on resources, plus was really expensive (altho that would be the criteria I would give on) Tidy cats tracks and has dust. Right now I'm using PaPurr, which is recycled paper in a form that closely resembles clumping clay litter. It is environmentally good, doesn't track too much, isn't too expensive and has no dust, but I have to change the entire box every other day (scooping at least 2x a day), which should not be the case with clumping litter. Plus, I can only find it at PetSmart and online at PetDirect. Does anyone have any better recommendations? Tx!
Alissha replied: "World's Best Cat litter. It's expensive but it works and is ecologically friendly. I too had a cat on pred.
Have you considered trying to convert him to inhaled steroids? It took quite a while to convince my cat to convert (close to a year on and off) but it was worth it. A decrease in the urination and increased thirst. Also, the lowered risk of steroid related problems was definitely worth it. I didn't believe that I could convert Simon as he is a "feisty" cat at best. This, of course, translates into a scruffed, masked and quickly examined cat :-)
Just some info on inhaled meds:"
kananaskis95 replied: "If he's peeing a lot and is on steroids then you should really have him checked out for diabetes! And as already suggested, get him on inhaled meds...."
My cat has allergic dermatitis, what can I do? My cat was diagnosed with allergic dermatitis. He started savage scratching around his face and lips. The vet gave him a prednisone shot, followed by a course of tablets, which helped. The condition seems to be coming back and he has started the savage scratching again. I use Frontline on him and he has no fleas. I suspect it is a seasonal allergy, because he started up in spring. He is also exclusively on the Hills Science Hyperallergenic diet. He does eat grass which I grow for him for "barfing" purposes, which he enjoys, and I wonder if he is not allergic to that. I am not in favour of him being put on the cortisone again. Is there any ointment safe for cats that you can recommend to ease the itching? I have tried a coal tar ointment, but it has a very sharp smell, and being a difficult cat, he won't let me near him with the stuff. Please help, he is in some discomfort....
Rusthon replied: "poor kitty. I sudgest you go to vet and ask expert advise. If not you can research in website more about Allergic dermatitis and find out how what causes them and the option to cure them."
jue7rc replied: "Have a look at the Pets Best RX website - they do a fantastic healing spray which can be used for pretty much any skin complaint. I always keep it in the house after one of my cats had ringworm which kept coming back. I live in the UK and had it sent from USA which cost a bit more but was absolutely worth it. The website also has a 24 hour help line where you can get advice. If the sore areas are around your cats face, then I would spray the stuff on my hands or a cotton wool pad and then gently wipe it on him, rather than just spray it straight from the bottle which would probably freak the poor soul out."
OR replied: "there are so many things in the at home environment that could be upsetting your cat's allergies. from what the floors are made of, materials carpets are made of, household cleaners, kitty litter, foods, perfumes, sprays detergents u name it. look up some stuff online & ask your vet for an allergy test to see what you're cat is allergic to! it can be done. another round of steroids wouldn't be a bad thing sometimes it takes a few tries and of course making proper modifications to the home to help the cat out. so sorry get well to the cat and i hope all goes well."
rmbrruffian replied: "I would suggest a referral to a Veterinary Dermatologist. They can help you get a handle on what is causing the allergies.
One thing - are you using carpet powders? I saw many cats (and dogs) with severe reactions to carpet powders. Hoovering can't get it all up, and they have their noses right down on the carpet."
RuneAmok replied: "Start by examining all the products you use on yourself and in your home. Hairspray and other hair products that are sprayed, cleansers, powders, all that stuff can be an issue. Cut back on how much you're using and/or reconsider the brands you're using. Think about switching to "green" cleaners and products.
Food - although he's on the hypoall. diet, this food still contains allergens. For shame, Hills! Rather than wasting your money on that stuff consider trying a brand of food that actually doesn't contain any allergens. The most common ones are corn, wheat, soy and sometimes chicken or fish.
Instead use a grainless food that uses a novel protein source such as venison.
You may not save any money buying a better food such as I've suggested, but at least you'll be getting your money's worth, which you do not get with Hills."
Why does are cat moves his mouth up and down like he has penut butter stuck on the roof of his mouth? Ck's w/ vet. Vet does not know why he does that. It is several times a day. Cat is 14 yrs old, get IV fluid daily, Prednisone .5 every other day, vitamin B shot 1 time a week and antibiotic daily. The vet said our cat had a raging infection last week. He is at the vet often and has been vomiting since last July. Vet has sent blood work to Texas A and M, has done ultra sound and there is nothing conclusive. He does not have pancreatitis and does not have tumors. Kidneys and heart are good. He still vomits. Anyone have a quess. Our vet is a cat specialist. We are in Chicago can anyone recommend where we can get any further help.
Katie C replied: "poor kitty... he sounds like he is going to die soon... :-( maybe he is trying to tell you it is his time to go.."
DM replied: "Has anyone looked in your cats mouth for dental issues. Cats with either severe dental disease, tooth root abscesses or loose teeth, will tend to react the way your cat does."
My 14-year old cat has Lymphoma. Anyone know of a homeopathic treatment? She's now getting shots of prednisone from the vet every 3 - 4 weeks. Her appetite and energy level improves after the shot, but by the time she's ready for the next one, she's pretty sick with lack of appetite and lethargy. She's lost weight, but it's been stable for the past month. Can anyone provide advice about prednisone shot vs. pills taken on a daily basis? We've tried chemo, but it made her pretty sick. She happened to be at the end of the prednisone regimen, so I may try again if and when she gets on her prednisone "high." Thanks for any advice, everyone. My heart is broken.

TotalRecipeHound replied: "Long term use of prednisone, or really any steroid, can cause internal bleeding. Don't know if your vet told you that or not. We lost a kitty due to a bleeding ulcer as a result of steroid use. Yes, medically, she needed it, but we didn't know how to recognize the problem. It's tough and I've been there several times. Sorry, can't help you with any homeopathic treatment. Good luck."
SoulCollaging Homeopath replied: "My 14-year-old (dying) cat is now 16 because of homeopathy. I lost another at 17 with similar symptoms, so went a different route.
The remedy she needs, though, depends upon her constitutional symptoms. Lymphoma is beyond self-help care. Few people understand that homeopathy is the philosophy, not the remedy, so you'd need to contact a certified veterinarian homeopath, who would talk with you for an hour or two to understand why she has these symptoms, then research and recommend a remedy that will restore balance (and cure, to the extent possible, lymphoma). Minimally, her last months/years will be in relative physical comfort. is a good place to start."
What can i do for my cat? My cat is injuried don't know if his temporarily paralyze. His nails are all scratched up. His belly is swollen. I am a first time cat own. I took him to the vet and the vet gave him a shot of steroids along with a prescription of prednisone. I do not know what the prescription it is for. The vet wanted to run some test & take X-rays. If i had the money it would have came up to about $300. I am on a fixed income with four children we live in a very small community. It was hard for me not to let the vet do his job. Can someone who has been through the same experiment PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
Mommyk232 replied: "I would recommend you give the cat to a friend or a shelter. If you can not provide for him- is it really fair? Would you deny medical care to one of your children?
I'm not a huge animal activist or anything. I just think if you have pets, you need to be able to tend to whatever medical needs they have. They can't tell you what hurts- like ppl can. So you need to be able to rely and PAY the vets to figure it out."
frozen_rose replied: "ask a vet for consultation"
sticky_feijoa replied: "Keep an eye on him, borrow money from a friend, if you can, to get the x-rays. That is all I can offer. My heart goes out to you and your cat."
budding author replied: "I'm sure you have some animal clinics in America, same as the UK free of charge!
I've even seen them on sky tv, check into that!!"
Turtle replied: "Prednisone is a steroid used most often for inflammation or swelling. Did the vet say at all what he thought might be wrong or was he unable to make any diagnosis without further tests? Sometimes they will let you make payments. Did you ask if they would do that? If not consult other vets to see if they will work with you. Please don't let the cat suffer."
jom replied: "See if there is a "Friends of the Animals" organization in your area or an organization similar to it. They might be able to assist you. Call groomers' or vets' offices and ask if they know of such an organization."
AirBaby replied: "Call your SPCA and ask if there are any low cost or income based clinics you can take him to. If they don't, ask the vet if you can pay him on installments. Explain that you are on a fixed income, but you are willing to work with the vet if he is willing to.
If the cat gets through this, consider buying insurance for him. It's generally low cost and can help pay for when these surprise problems arise. Make sure you keep him up to date on his shots and get him fixed."
KittyMom replied: "Is your cat letting out any sounds other than the normal?
If so then he is in pain, and thats his way of letting you know.
Sinse the vet gave him steroids & prednisone, give it a week, if you dont see any changes with your cat, thats a decision your gonna have to make in getting kitty well, either if its talking to your vet about a payment plan, or finding another home for him.
You also have to beware of some vets too just as in MD's, they want to run all sorts of test for $$$$"
BECKBY replied: "Make sure he has water and food nearby in case he feels like eating. Keep him warm and don't handle him except to pet easily and talk to him.If there is a shelter you can give it to they will either take care of it or if it is really bad they will put it out of misery. Don't just let him suffer too long. The vet must have thought he had a chance if he didn't say the cat may die. Best wishes and let your kids know that part of life is death and injury. It is as natural as breathing and has to take place.Take care of them if he dies.Their feelings are hurt so easily and they love animals so much and with all of their being that it is hard to give one up."
joseph g replied: "Ouch. Your cat decided to climb inside of a car to get warm. I have seen it too many times. When the cars owner started it up your cat was injured. I would give him about a week to get better using the steroids. If it does not seem to be improving after that I would suggest taking it to your local SPCA. They will help you to the best of their ability. They also offer low cost services or will allow you to clean cages and such to cover costs."
